PaiSweet, Cute Little Airhead Pai from Tibet is really what made Yakumo look twice at her, and in doing so spends the latter half of his time taking care of and protecting her. Pai seems only to have the intellectual capabilities of a little girl; she is sweet, kind, innocent and unworldly, yet she too is able to call up certain monsters to her aid, not because she had defeated them but more because they were touched by her compassion (somehow). It was her kind nature and innocence which turned many enemies into friends throughout the course of their journey. Pai is the sole survivor of the Sanjiyan Unkara, also known as the Triclops. Pai is just over 300 years old, yet she looks like a normal teenager. Don't be fooled by her cute appearance though, for she possesses great power. As a member of the Sanjiyan race, Pai has the power of immortality. Since Pai was a little girl, she has dreamed about becoming a human. Also to destroy the 'Demon-Eye King', Kaiyan Wang, also known as Shiva. Although she has forgotten the reason why she wants to become human, she has not forgotten how important it is to her. Fate would have it that she would meet Professor Satoru Fugii on one of his archeological expeditions. Coincidentially, Fugii was searching for the Sanjiyan Unkara. Much to Pai's delight, Prof. Fugii promised to help her become a human being claiming that he knew how such a task could be accomplished. On their trip to become human, Prof. Fugii died, leaving Pai only with a letter to his son Yakumo and a promise that she would become human. Pai continued on her quest, but now she was searching for the person Prof. Fugii promised would help her, Yakumo Fugii. Sanjiyan Unkara (Three Eyes/Triclops) The Sanjiyans are beautiful, extremely long-lived creatures who are capable of consuming one soul and merging it with their own. (A human soul looks like a light, gelatinous ~10cm radius ball.) Apparently, the Sanjiyans are a degenerate race; the older ones have become decadent and callous, while the younger, more emotional ones will develop split personalities (eg. the dual nature of Pai/Sanjiyan). Some Sanjiyans believed that this mental death will be their ultimate end, and volunteered themselves to be turned into human beings. They also have to "sleep" for a long time after performing powerful spells. Parvati (Sanjiyan) was extremely unimpressed by Yakumo as her Wu and had told him to the face that she really preferred someone else a couple of times. But when Yakumo manages to prove that he wasn't the no-hoper she thought he was, she soon began to warm to him. In Hindu legend, Parvati is the wife of Shiva, renowned for her charming & gentle nature. (It seems that this became fixed in Hindu legend early in the first millenium AD ... but the vol. 4 scene where Pai confronts Shiva is set in 1678.) © 1987 Yuzo Takada/Kodansha.
